Envision Our Future, Workshop #2

On November 8, 2014 over 100 residents and community leaders came together to collaborate on a vision for the future Community Library. Volunteers worked for over 6 hours to decide on the purpose statement that will guide discussions on the future of the
library facility.

We invite all participants and those who couldn’t make the first workshop to join us again on January 31 to set goals for the project.

You’re Invited

Dear Patrons and Members of the Community,

We need your assistance. The Board of Trustees of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library has the responsibility of providing the best library services possible. Over the past seven years, use of the library has grown exponentially. We are now serving residents five nights a week in classrooms at William Floyd High School in addition to the library, and at locations throughout the tri hamlet area including the Mastic Recreation Center, local parks and historic sites. More than 800 people walk through our doors every day. Community groups often wait months for library meeting rooms to become available, and library program sessions and services are limited due to lack of space and extremely limited parking.

In that regard, we have been working on ways to resolve multiple issues with the current facility. We have explored, in great detail, a phased approach to repair and update portions of the building over the course of a seven- to 10-year period. During the course of this planning, we discovered materials containing asbestos which require abatement, and structural steel repairs that will limit the scope of the project. This scenario also would come at a significant overall cost. As stewards of your library, we need your feedback to determine the future of our facility.

We will be hosting a series of three public visioning workshops, which will enable us to create a plan for the library that honors the unique needs of our community. Some of the options available for consideration include renovation of the existing building, acceptance of donated land from the Town of Brookhaven at the Links Property as the location for a brand new, state-of-the-art facility, or other scenarios. We encourage our residents, business owners and employees of local businesses to attend these workshops which are designed to garner feedback and allow your ideas to be the driving force of this project.

Our goal is to work collaboratively with members of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley community, to ensure that we continue to provide exceptional library services in a fully-functional facility that residents deserve. Together we will reach a consensus.
The first of the three workshops is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th, 2014, in the William Floyd High School senior cafeteria, 240 Mastic Beach Road, Mastic Beach, NY 11951. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am and the meeting will run from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Free childcare and meals will be provided throughout the day. It is important for participants to commit to all three workshops. The second and third workshops will be held after the holidays in 2015, dates TBA.

Thank you for your consideration and we hope that you will help us come up with a solution to create a library of which we can all be proud. We hope to see you on November 8th ! Please share this invitation with family, friends and neighbors.

Sincerely,
Board of Trustees
Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library
